Moritz Ostruschnjak (Germany) – NON+ULTRAS

Tickets

Duration: 1 h. 10 min.

Recommended age: 12+

On the stage, 100 scarves, a carpet, a tableau. Juventus Turin, Kirmes Pirmasenz, High as fuck, Sauerland Powerland, Iran, All Blacks. The important, the famous, the ridiculous, the provincial, slogans and logos stand side by side and scream their messages into the auditorium.

In NON+ULTRAS choreographer Moritz Ostruschnjak uses the logic of ubiquitous social media to trace the connections between fanatic fanhood and political protest forms. Taylor Swift fans, also known as swifties, and soccer ultras, politics and protest, overturned police cars, Bengalos and fluffy mascots collide here, as do Arabic chants, English stadium anthems, the Mickey Mouse Club and Beethoven.

NON+ULTRAS uses dance, video and music to create a swirl of layers of meaning that seem to reach out randomly and erratically to all corners and ends, casting a spotlight on a society that surrenders to the power of images, pays homage to stars and populists alike and is irreconcilably polarized.

Coming from the sprayer scene, Moritz Ostruschnjak developed his interest in contemporary dance through breakdancing. He studied from 2001 to 2003 at Iwanson International in Munich and completed his training with Maurice Béjart in Lausanne. He has been working as a freelance choreographer in Munich since 2013 and has created a total of teen productions of his own.

Most recently <CRY WHY= a duet for two dancers, two pianos, two inline skates and a pianist premiered in September 2024 and “NON+ULTRAS”, a performance for eight dancers, 500 fan scarves and video in January 2025. His pieces have been shown at numerous international festivals and have been selected three times for the TANZPLATTFORM DEUTSCHLAND.

Moritz Ostruschnjak is one of the Aerowaves Twenty21 Artists, was awarded the City of Munich’s Förderpreis Tanz and is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and Tanztendenz München e.V.

In his works Moritz Ostruschnjak dwells upon the transformations in physical and social experiences in times of digitization and virtualization. His pieces are spaces made up of hyperlinks which utilize the media-machinery of the 21st century.
