Program of short works

Duration: 30 min.

For several years, Yoann Bourgeois has pursued an artistic research rooted in devices that amplify physical phenomena. This constellation of works is a lifelong research. It is a process of permanent creation he calls: Tentative approaches to a point of suspension.

Intention

Origin / Perspectives

I began to build my program because I had reached an age where I could imagine the inevitable outlines of life, regardless of their reality, and speak of the future as if it were the past. This age was not an objective threshold nor a temporal reality; but a growing awareness over time.  No matter the number of days left, no matter how optimistic the prognosis, our days would not be enough.  My idea was to defuse time. Of course the task was impossible in itself, but there were ways to approach the subject.

My program would be straightforward, definitive. I chose one simple sentence to name the body of works: Tentative approaches to a point of suspension. Something like the desire for a corpus, yes.  We started with the details. In details, we saw that a collection of short acts can be just as powerful as a single larger work. Pieced together in a program, they seek a common goal: to encircle the present. Through the physical intertwining of the constructions onstage—the amalgam of various apparatus and machinery, how they relate to each other, to space and time, to the audience, to an image— join in pursuit of one moment: “the point of suspension”.

The act

Dedicated to details, I began to study the act. Was the act, a particular format cast aside by “traditional” circus and ignored by “new” circus, an anachronism? I decided to reinvest in this form of small potentials, of multiple singularities. The act involves maximal reduction to reach the greatest intensity. It is a simplification by extraction in order to achieve one goal: each act must exist in itself. Without cultural scaffolding, in all contexts, the act must stand alone.

Tentative approaches to a point of suspension

After seven years of sketching, I see these independent acts cohering in a kind of constellation, gravitating towards a common core. Their nucleus is the search for suspension.

Each act I create attempts to reach a point of suspension through various relationships between person and physical object. Each point of suspension I seek exists at the crux of two perceived and existing realities: the field of physics, which defines matter and energy, and the field of temporality, which shows an exact instant, a sort of absolute present. The intersection of these two fields opens a window into eternity.

Infinite programs

Every environment has the potential to become a stage. Thus we invest in every environment. Drawing from our collection of acts, we attend to the nuances of each site to construct a singular program. The given converging elements—physical, historical, economic— inspire the program. We then contextualize and characterize the work as it exists and is to be experienced— as performance, as exposition, as wandering, etc. Always, we seek to find balance so that the environment serves the art work and the art work poetries the environment.
