In the electrifying duet The Lion’s Den Sabina Bočková and Johana Pocková push the boundaries between entertainment and perversity. Under the atmospheric live music by Lukáš Palán, the two performers embody a fierce array of cultural figures and references taken from mass media. From manipulating the audience to self-manipulation, they shift from the roles of leaders to victims.
The Lion’s Den, which started as a performative research on media and political populism’s manipulative powers, has become an emotionally charged performance. Playing with meaning with the audience’s complicity, Bočková and Pocková fall into a symbolic lion’s den, opening an abyss of uncertainty.
Sabina Bočková (1995) is a dancer and choreographer based in Prague (Czech Republic). She studied classical and modern dance and after dancing in ballet companies for three years she decided to work as a freelance artist.
In 2019, together with Johana Pockova she created the duet The Lion’s Den inspired by mass media and political populism and another duet in collaboration with the Slovak performer Tomas Janypka songlines: expedition 97/18, a piece which delves into the loss of a close one. In 2020 together with Johana Pocková and Inga Zotova-Mikshina she created a new piece Treatment of Remembering, which tackles the topic of environmental pollution.
She is a member of the POCKETART collective with which she produces her own creations. Alongside her own work she has also collaborated for a long time as a performer with the Tantehorse company, the company tYhle led by choreographer Marie Gourdain and most recently with Cirk La Putyka.
Fascinated by simple and obvious body language, she transforms movement through choreographic structures while at the same time addressing topics and themes that echo social and cultural issues.
Johana Pocková (1992) is choreographer and dancer in the field of contemporary dance, physical theater and performing arts based in Prague. In 2019, she founded the company POCKetART z.s. As a performer, Pocková collaborates with Tantehorse company, Cirk La Putyka, Jana Stárková and other Czech independent artists.
She studied at the Duncan Centre Conservatory in Prague and at SEAD (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance), and benefited from a scholarship at the Peridance Capezio Centre and Limon Institut in New York. After her studies, she was awarded for her choreography MURDER! A little comics history at the choreographic competition New Europe – Jarmila Jerabkova Award 2017. In 2020, she received the 1st prize of the Czech organization Dance News.
In her creations, Pocková is interested in searching for a lyrical and poetic dance language combined with absurdity and irony. She is also interested in combining art forms with dance such as classical singing, acting and visual arts. Her work includes the dance pieces: Why not now?, Spectrum, Onto the scale! and Turned away faces II. She has also created Full store of emotions, a piece which brings together a 90 year old grandmother and an 8 year old girl who perform with four professional dancers. This project is being adapted to a dance film entitled Folds of Touch.
In 2019, she created the duet The Lion’s Den, which was selected by the Czech Dance Platform and Aerowaves. In her newest production, Treatment of Remembering, co-created with Inga Zotova-Mikshina and Sabina Bočková they explore environmental pollution.
